Are the paper straws you use safe?

From January 1, the catering industry in Zhejiang Province banned the use of non-degradable disposable plastic straws. As one of the alternatives, paper straws appeared in beverage shops on the streets.

In order to understand the current quality status of paper straws in the market, in February this year, the Zhejiang Provincial Consumer Rights Protection Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission) as an ordinary consumer opened a general interest in Hangzhou KFC Peace Hotel Store, Heytea Hangzhou Huanglong Vanke GO Store, Michelle Ice City Dinglan Plaza Store, Luckin Coffee Pearl Street Store, Fushimi Momoyama Xintiandi Store, Starbucks Dinglan Plaza Store, Coco Leti Port Store, Chabai Dao Loti Port Store, Guming Dongxin Road Store, The paper straws provided by 10 milk tea beverage physical stores such as Naixue’s Chaleti Port store were sampled, and the third testing agency was entrusted to carry out comparative tests on the sensory requirements, total migration, potassium permanganate consumption, heavy metals (in terms of lead), lead, arsenic, formaldehyde, and fluorescent substances according to the mandatory national standard GB 4806.8-2016 “National Food Safety Standard Paper and Cardboard Materials and Products for Food Contact”. In addition, according to the daily use habits of consumers, the temperature resistance of paper straws is also tested.

The test found that the sensory requirements of 10 batches of samples, as well as the items of lead, arsenic, formaldehyde, fluorescent substances, total migration and heavy metals, all met the standard requirements, but the consumption of potassium permanganate in 2 batches did not meet the national standard, and the temperature resistance of 1 batch of samples did not meet the requirements, and degumming and delamination occurred.

(The picture shows the test of potassium permanganate consumption items) The temperature resistance of paper straws mainly assesses the performance of the product, and if softening, delamination, degumming and other phenomena occur, it will affect the use of the product. Since none of the 10 batches of paper straw products in this sampling indicated the category, the tests were all carried out according to the test conditions of “water temperature 60 °C and water capacity 0.5 liters”. The test found that the paper straw of a brand beverage store had delamination and degumming phenomenon, which did not meet the temperature resistance requirements.

According to the national standard, the limit value of potassium permanganate consumption is required to be ≤40mg/kg, according to the relevant technical personnel of the testing agency: potassium permanganate consumption refers to the total amount of all substances that migrate from food contact materials to aqueous food simulants and can be oxidized by potassium permanganate under certain conditions. These substances are mainly some small molecule organic matter, some of which may remain in the human body for a long time after entering the human body, affecting the normal metabolism of the human body, thereby endangering human health.

The test found that although the 8 batches of samples met the standard requirements, the test results were quite different, and the minimum value of the test result was 8.6mg/kg and the maximum value was 39 mg/kg, which was a risk of exceeding the standard. In addition, the detection values of potassium permanganate consumption of paper straws in two brand beverage stores were 52 mg/kg and 64 mg/kg, respectively, which exceeded the requirements of the national mandatory standards.

According to the test results, the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission met with the two beverage companies on March 9 and 10, and the relevant responsible persons of the two companies expressed no objection to the test results. At the same time, the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission put forward requirements: first, to count the use and inventory of this batch of paper straws in all stores in Zhejiang; Second, the two beverage companies should deal with the manufacturers who provide the batch of paper straws; Third, in the future, we must strictly control the quality of products, and never allow similar situations to occur again; Fourth, the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission will continue to pay attention to it, and if necessary, will carry out retrospective and comparative tests on this type of goods; Fifth, the two enterprises are required to reply to the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission in written letters before March 12.

As of the release time, the two beverage companies have processed the manufacturers of the batch of paper straws (Shandong Rizhao Dongfangyuan Daily Products Co., Ltd., Dongguan Hengsheng Packaging Technology Co., Ltd.), and at the same time, the newly produced paper straws have also been tested, and the test results will be timely feedback to the Provincial Consumer Protection Commission.

Consumers are advised to:

1. Paper straw is a certified product within the scope of the national industrial product production license, and the production enterprise needs to obtain the production license of the product to carry out production. Consumers can check whether there is a QS mark or production license number on the outer packaging of the paper straw to determine whether the manufacturer is a certified producer.

2. It is recommended to buy and use paper straws with individually packaged paper, and if it is found that the product has moisture, mildew, special odor and other phenomena, it is recommended not to use it;

3. Paper straws are disposable products and are not recommended for reuse.

Note: This comparative test is only responsible for the sample.
